Vijay Kapur, the insalubrious cad who broke Lady Charlotte’s heart, would operate his empire from his lounge above the Tea Rooms in Lokhandwala. Lady Charlotte was never allowed access to his ‘speak easy’ lounge, as the affairs of running his empire were held in secrecy.
Vijay held court with cohorts from Mumbai’s crime syndicates. Decadent parties and debauchery would continue for days, with all kinds of socialites and official statemen revelling with Vijay, while various contraband, arms and liqueur hidden throughout the lounge. Vijay’s Lounge has been faithfully recreated from the photograph given by the ‘illegitimate’ family bloodline, as well as items discovered from Lady Charlotte’s estate, left in storage on the upper floors at Charlotte Street, her house of exile in the later years of her life.
